Statement from the Ninth Congress of the Kachin Women’s Association Thailand

The Ninth Congress of the Kachin Women’s Association Thailand (KWAT) was held in a liberated area near the Thai-Burma Border from 20-23 February 2017. 43 members attended the Congress, including staff from inside Burma, and three observers.

During the four days of the Congress, programs and project activities and Secretariat activities from 2015-2016 were reported and reviewed, and the Constitution, operational manual and finance policy were updated and finalized. Furthermore, future strategic work plans were developed for the coming two year term.

At the Congress, all staff members reaffirmed KWAT’s strong commitment to work towards genuine peace and reforming federal democracy in Burma; the promotion of women’s participation in decision making at all levels, and to the elimination of all forms of violence against women including human trafficking. A decision was made to promote young leadership to build a just and peaceful society in Burma. The establishment of health policies for women and children is also a priority for KWAT.. There was a strong commitment to provide better support form women from conflict zones to improve the quality of their lives.

The three members of the Executive Committee and the General Secretary, Joint General Secretary (1) and Joint General Secretary (2) were appointed for the 2017-2018 term. The two advisory boards were also appointed.

KWAT was established on 9th September 1999. It is an organization working for the empowerment and advancement of Kachin women in order to improve the lives of women and children in Kachin society, and to establish a peaceful and just society.
