Health Program

Health Program

The health program is mainly delivered through a clinic in Mai Ja Yang, in the south of Kachin State. The activities of this program include adolescent reproductive health trainings, school healthcare and awareness trainings, malaria and tuberculosis prevention and medication program, outreach health campaigns to local villages, and a daily mother and child care clinic in Ja Reng Yang. KWAT also conducts periodic community health surveys in neighboring fourteen villages, gathering information to evaluate and improve the patient care to best fit the needs of the community. In near future, the clinic will also have a medical laboratory for efficient diagnoses of common illnesses.

Objectives

  • To provide adequate health services for local communities and IDPs
  • To provide basic health education and conduct health surveys
  • To equip community members with relevant trainings and health-related skills

Health Sub-Program

1. Traditional Birth Attendants Training

This training session trains traditional birth attendants (similar to midwives) because mothers in local communities sometimes cannot reach the clinic or healthcare provider at the time of delivery. This skill is very useful because it can significantly reduce deaths of infants and mothers.

2. Basic Health Education for Schools

Twice a year, outreach staff members from the clinic teach a class in 20-30 schools nearby about hygiene, infections, drugs, nutrition, contraception, and the reproductive system. They also distribute Albendazole and vitamin A supplements to the class.

3. Reproductive Health Trainings

These trainings taught participants in Mae Sai, Thailand, a variety of topics, from puberty and family planning to HIV/AIDS.

4. Trauma Healing Training

Through these sessions, participants learned how to handle various traumatic situations and counsel those in need because they need to meet with victims of war, trafficking, and domestic violence.
